Martine Gutierrez

Indigeneous Woman special edition, 2018

124-page set printed artist magazine with digital chromogenic print | 24/50 (edition of 50 + 8 APs) | 16 ½ x 11 in

Blurring the lines between subject, stylist, and storyteller, Martine Gutierrez created Indigenous Woman as a fully realized artist magazine starring, styled, photographed, and written entirely by the artist. This 124-page publication adopts the glossy language of high fashion editorial to subvert and reimagine narratives around gender, beauty, and Indigenous identity. At once satirical and sincere, the work challenges the systems of image making and representation through the very tools that shape them. Part magazine, part performance, Indigenous Woman encapsulates Gutierrez’s expansive, multidisciplinary practice where portrayal of the self becomes a strategy of empowerment and critique.
